The cycle of Beethoven's complete works for cello and piano ends with this session in which a piece from his youth (Sonata No. 2) is contrasted with other two sonatas of an indisputable maturity (Sonatas Nos. 4 and 5). The latter two are compositions in which Beethoven reveals his enigmatic and sometimes intensely concentrated character. In these works, the piano and cello play an equal role; they complement and balance each other out. In the words of the critic Otto de Greiff, "they are an intimately expressed dialogue".
