Haydn and the great forms of the sacred genre

DESCRIPTION

Haydn's first approach to religious music was as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. From then on, he composed numerous scores for the Catholic Church as a testimony of his fervent faith. Both works mentioned above were composed in his final years. In the Te Deum, a hymn of praise, as well as in the Theresienmesse, we encounter a Haydn who still fully masters his musical skill acquired throughout the years. These spiritual pieces were composed at the service of a gleaming aesthetic, primordially optimistic, albeit not free of resignation.
