The charming city of Cartagena de Indias, located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is a principal tourist destination in South America. Its old town, a Unesco World Heritage Site, abounds with leafy plazas, narrow cobblestoned streets and dazzling colored buildings. Likewise, the spirit that has named it “the Heroic City” surrounds the walls of its impressive fortress, bordering the sea; a place, overall, where the strength of history and a visible African and European heritage are keenly felt.
Its beauty has been the muse of writers, poets and composers alike. It is no surprise, then, that in the midst of its modern day vibrant activity as port and commercial hub, the city has also grown as an international attraction for the arts. Certainly, here, you will want to be lured away by the sounds of music.
Through nearly twelve seasons, the Cartagena International Music Festival has gained a special place in the international circuit of classical music events. Its current most distinctive characteristic is its approach to music from two contrasting visions:
one European, the other Latin American; here, in addition to the classical, other cultured musical expressions from both world regions are also welcome.
Every year, the program centers on a particular theme, in an effort to understand the key breakthroughs in the history of music in current and innovative ways; thus, the artists are world-renowned musicians whose performances stand out for their originality or specialized form.
Certainly, the event’s singular energy comes from its local context, diverse venues and warm atmosphere, where listening to orchestral and chamber music, as well as solo playing, is a one-of-a-kind experience.
These packages are designed to give you - our Visitors Patrons - a relaxed, joyful and unique time in Cartagena de Indias. 2018’s theme will be dedicated to the music of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, considered the greatest exemplars of the classical style.
The Festival will aim for audiences to come in close proximity with the language embedded in some of these composers’ most important works and, likewise, hear them with “new ears”.
Given its approach from a European and Latin American perspective, guest artists will include the Münchener Kammerorchester, the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, pianists Rudolf Buchbinder and Nelson Freire, the Schumann Quartett, and cellists Julia Hagen and Santiago Cañón.
On that same note, the repertoire will encompass works such as Beethoven’s Concerto n.º 3 for piano and orchestra, Haydn’s Concerto n.º 2 for cello and orchestra, Mozart’s Symphony n.º 40, but will also feature the classical tones of Latin American composers Heitor Villa- Lobos and Adolfo Mejía.
