Enrique Granados is universally recognized as one of the most important musicians in shaping and affirming Spanish identity in 19th-century music. He was a student of Felipe Pedrell, who is said to have initiated Spanish musical nationalism. Granados’ love for painting, particularly the works of Francisco Goya, inspired Goyescas, his most famous work—a piano suite composed of six pieces, each conceived as an autonomous, eloquent, and descriptive scene: Los requiebros, Coloquio en la reja, El fandango de candil, Quejas o la maja y el ruiseñor, Intermezzo, El amor y la muerte (balada), and Epílogo: Serenata del espectro.
