Biography
Russian-Israeli pianist Elena Bashkirova is one of today’s most distinguished chamber musicians, admired for the intellectual depth of her interpretations, her exceptional collaborative artistry and her enduring contribution to international musical life. As a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and artistic director, she has built a career founded on the conviction that chamber music represents one of the highest forms of musical expression.
Born in Moscow into one of Russia’s most distinguished musical families, Bashkirova studied with her father, the legendary pianist and pedagogue Dmitry Bashkirov, before establishing an international career that has taken her to the world’s leading concert halls and festivals. Since settling in Berlin in 1992, she has continued to develop an artistic profile distinguished by extraordinary versatility and an uncompromising commitment to musical excellence.
Bashkirova is the founder and Artistic Director of the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, established in 1998 and now recognised as one of the world’s leading chamber music festivals. She also founded the acclaimed Intonations Festival in Berlin, creating artistic platforms that bring together many of today’s most distinguished instrumentalists and singers in innovative chamber music programmes.
Throughout her career she has collaborated with some of the greatest musicians of our time, including Daniel Barenboim, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Natalia Gutman, Martha Argerich, Anna Netrebko, René Pape and Dorothea Röschmann, among many others. Her performances have appeared regularly at the Lucerne Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, George Enescu Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn and numerous other international festivals.
An acclaimed recording artist, Bashkirova has received major international distinctions, including the International Classical Music Award (ICMA) for her recording of Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons and Album for the Young. Her recordings of Mozart, Dvořák and the central chamber music repertoire have further confirmed her reputation as one of the leading interpreters of her generation.
Alongside her performing career, Elena Bashkirova remains deeply committed to artistic leadership and musical education. She currently serves as President of the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Foundation in Leipzig, continuing a lifetime dedicated to fostering chamber music at the highest international level.
