The Schumann Quartett is internationally recognised as one of the leading string quartets of its generation, celebrated for the intensity of its musical dialogue, interpretative freedom and exceptional artistic refinement. Acclaimed by critics as one of today’s most compelling chamber ensembles, the quartet has established itself through performances that combine technical brilliance with profound emotional insight.
The ensemble brings together violinists Erik Schumann and Ken Schumann, violist Matthew McDowell, and cellist Mark Schumann. Having performed together since childhood, the Schumann brothers have developed an extraordinary level of musical understanding, creating an ensemble distinguished by its remarkable cohesion, spontaneity and expressive depth.
Regular guests at the world’s leading concert halls and festivals, the Schumann Quartett performs at venues including the Musikverein Vienna, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Kölner Philharmonie, the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus Dortmund and many others. Their international appearances also include prestigious festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Mozartfest, and the Heidelberger Frühling String Quartet Festival.
The quartet has collaborated with distinguished artists including Andreas Ottensamer, Kit Armstrong, Sabine Meyer, Anna-Lucia Richter, Sharon Kam, Katharina Konradi and Lisa Batiashvili, exploring an extensive repertoire that ranges from the Classical and Romantic masters to contemporary music.
Their award-winning discography reflects an artistic curiosity that extends beyond the traditional quartet canon. Recordings such as Intermezzo, Fragment and their acclaimed project devoted to the music of 1923 have received international praise for their originality, interpretative depth and exceptional musicianship.
