Biography

Venezuelan pianist and composer Gabriela Montero is internationally celebrated for her exceptional artistry, visionary musicianship and unparalleled gift for improvisation. Widely regarded as one of the most distinctive musical voices of her generation, she has built a career that combines extraordinary pianistic brilliance with an unwavering commitment to artistic freedom and human dignity.

Born in Caracas, Montero gave her first public performance at the age of eight before continuing her studies in the United States and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Since then, she has appeared as a soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Americas and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, collaborating with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Marin Alsop, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

Montero has performed at many of the world’s foremost concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Kennedy Center, the Sydney Opera House, the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. Her performances are distinguished not only by their interpretative depth but also by her celebrated ability to create spontaneous improvisations inspired by themes suggested by the audience—a rare artistry that has become her unmistakable signature.

Alongside her performing career, Montero has established herself as an accomplished composer. Her orchestral works, including Ex Patria, Babel, and her Piano Concerto No. 1, “Latin Concerto,” have received international acclaim for their expressive power and originality. Her recordings have earned numerous distinctions, including a Latin Grammy Award, while her albums have consistently received critical praise for their artistic excellence.

An outspoken advocate for democracy and human rights, Montero has become an influential public voice beyond the concert stage. She has been recognised by organisations including the Human Rights Foundation, Amnesty International, and the Oslo Freedom Forum, where she received the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent in 2024. Her artistic career reflects a profound belief in music as both a creative and a moral force.
