Biography

Dr. Mei Rui is an internationally recognized neuroscientist, concert pianist and educator whose career uniquely bridges the worlds of science and music. Combining distinguished artistic achievements with pioneering research in neuroscience, she has become a leading voice in exploring the profound relationship between music, the brain and human well-being.

A graduate of Yale University, the Yale School of Music and Stony Brook University, she holds degrees in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry as well as Music, completing doctoral studies that brought together scientific inquiry and artistic excellence. She currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Music in Medicine and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where her research focuses on the neurological effects of music, cognition, emotion and healing.

As a pianist, Dr. Rui has earned international acclaim for performances distinguished by technical brilliance and expressive depth. Winner of the Bronze Medal at the 2015 World Piano Competition, she has appeared as soloist with orchestras in the United States, Europe and Asia, performing in renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Steinway Hall, the Louvre Museum Auditorium, the National Concert Hall in Taipei and the Shanghai Concert Hall. Critics have praised her performances for their extraordinary colour, refinement and musical intensity.

Equally active as a chamber musician and educator, she has been Artist-in-Residence at the Yellow Barn Festival, has collaborated with distinguished artists including Itzhak Perlman, Peter Frankl, Paul Katz and Roger Tapping, and has taught masterclasses throughout the United States. She was inducted into the prestigious Steinway Teacher Hall of Fame in recognition of her outstanding contribution to music education.

Beyond her artistic career, Dr. Rui is internationally respected for her research into the cognitive and therapeutic effects of music, helping to build meaningful dialogue between neuroscience, medicine and artistic practice. Her work demonstrates how musical experience can influence perception, memory, emotion and quality of life, making her one of today’s most compelling advocates for the intersection of science and the arts.
