Biography

Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia is a prolific soloist, composer, commissioner, recording artist, painter, and photographer described as “technically flawless… totally under the skin of the composers’ idioms” (The Strad). He was named a BBC New Generation Artist in 2022. Born in Bogotá in 1995, Cañón-Valencia made his orchestral debut as a soloist with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá at age six, blossoming into an accomplished musician praised as “an artist from whom sound and texture flow with ease and authenticity” (The Whole Note) and a “virtuoso of outstanding versatility and technical ease” (The Violin Channel).

Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia is one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation and among the leading Latin American instrumentalists on today’s international stage. Admired for the depth of his interpretations, exceptional technical mastery and artistic versatility, he has been described by The Strad as “technically flawless,” combining extraordinary virtuosity with remarkable musical maturity.

He made his solo debut at the age of six with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra, launching a career that has taken him to major concert halls across Europe, the Americas and Asia, performing with distinguished orchestras under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductors. In 2022, he was selected as a BBC New Generation Artist, one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions for emerging classical musicians, further establishing his place on the international concert stage.

His 2025–2026 season includes concerto appearances throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America, as well as performances at the Cartagena Music Festival. He has received top honours at many of the world’s leading competitions, including the International Tchaikovsky Competition, where he was awarded the Silver Medal, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition, achievements that have confirmed his position among the foremost cellists of his generation.

Deeply committed to contemporary music, Santiago Cañón-Valencia has premiered numerous works for cello and has recorded for labels including Deutsche Grammophon and Sono Luminus, continually expanding the instrument’s repertoire. Since 2011, he has been supported by the Mayra & Edmundo Esquenazi Scholarship through Fundación Salvi, which has accompanied his artistic development since the beginning of his international career.

At the XXI Cartagena Music Festival, Santiago Cañón-Valencia represents the excellence of the Colombian instrumental tradition, bringing the virtuosity, artistic depth and expressive power of one of today’s most accomplished cellists.
