Trío Libre

Piano, marimba, congas
Festival de Música en Cartagena

Biography

Led by Latin Grammy-winning Colombian composer and percussionist Samuel Torres, Trío Libre is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Afro-Latin jazz. Conceived as a chamber music ensemble, the trio explores an intimate and sophisticated sound world through the interaction of piano, vibraphone and congas, creating a musical language in which chamber music precision meets rhythmic vitality and the freedom of improvisation.

Its repertoire travels effortlessly across a wide musical landscape, from imaginative reinterpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach to fresh readings of the bolero and Latin American musical traditions. Each performance balances composition and improvisation, allowing tradition to become the starting point for continuous artistic exploration.

One of the ensemble’s defining characteristics is its reimagining of the role of percussion within Latin jazz. Rather than serving solely as a rhythmic foundation, the congas assume a melodic, harmonic and expressive voice, expanding the possibilities of chamber music while challenging conventional approaches to the genre.

At the XXI Cartagena Music Festival, Trío Libre presents an innovative vision of Afro-Latin jazz, building bridges between classical music, improvisation and the rich musical traditions of Latin America through a distinctly contemporary artistic language.
