Biography
Acclaimed for his innovation, Tomás Martín is one of the most captivating and outstanding castanet soloists of the moment. His virtuosity and the new approach he gives to castanets has aroused the interest of contemporary composers for the creation of works for this instrument.
Four decades since the last composition for castanets and orchestra, Flores Chaviano dedicated his “Four scenes from the Spanish suite for castanets, Seville, Córdoba, Asturias and Castilla” to him, which was commissioned for and premiered at the 34th Festival of Spanish Music in León, with the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla y León conducted by Jhoanna Sierralta, to great public acclaim.
He began his career as a Castanets Soloist after receiving praise from maestro Miguel Ortega and the Italian mezzo-soprano Anna Bonitatibus, for his performance of the duo No. 14 from Bizet’s Carmen at the Madrid National Music Auditorium with the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla y León. He is the director and founder of the CAMerata IberyCAS, which combines the classical string camerata and castanets as a solo instrument. Its main objective is to disseminate the Spanish chamber repertoire. In the 2020/2021 season he premiered two works dedicated to him by the composers Joaquín Gericó and Flores Chaviano: “The Spanish Fantasy for Castanets and Chamber Orchestra” and “Three movements of the Spanish Suite by Isaac Albéniz” for a concert tour of Castilla y León. Currently Jose Zárate is composing a piece for him for piano and castanets, and María José Cordero is composing a piece for the camerata. His performances have been broadcast on Classic Radio and Spanish Television.
In the next season he will collaborate with the Cali Philharmonic Orchestra, Iberacademy Symphony Orchestra (Medellín), Avila Symphony Orchestra, Cantabrian Symphony Orchestra, “Cristóbal Halffter” Symphony Orchestra, Ponferrada City, Ponferrada Camerata, Burgos Orchestra, Ciclo del Teatro del Liceo in Salamanca, Percussion Quartet Tamborimba-Cali (Colombia), Summer Festival of the Villa de Simancas and will give a Masterclass at the Chopin University of Music (Poland). In the 2021 edition, he will be part of the jury of the Young Emerging Artists contest of the Junta de Castilla y León in the music section.
Born in Madrid, he is currently the assistant principal timpanist of the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra and Professor of Percussion at the Castilla y León Superior Conservatory. In addition, he has a diploma in joint osteopathy and therapeutic massage, specializing in the treatment and recovery of musicians affected by musculoskeletal injuries. He received his doctorate from the University of Valladolid.
