Grieg's songs are inspired by Norwegian folk songs originally played on traditional instruments such as the Hardanger fiddle. Grieg masterfully transcribed these folk songs on the piano. Grieg's Norwegian Folk Dances, Op. 66 is an example of the revitalization of folk music, a refined and original response to the modernization of Norwegian folk music.
