M. Mussorgsky is the Russian musician who most departed from the traditional
way of thinking and writing music. The composer chose other paths of writing
that got away from the elaboration and development of themes (which
constituted the compositional model followed by musicians of the great German
tradition). Pictures at an Exhibition is a paradigmatic example of this. What leads
the way of the music are only suggestions, impressions, atmospheres; rather than
the technical and coherent elaboration of given musical materials.
