Frescoes are usually small paintings that make up a gigantic collage. Grieg was interested in German folk music and tried to discover how it was used in the works of Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn. All stages of Grieg's work with folk materials are fully reflected in his lyrical pieces. Like other nationalist composers, such as Chopin or Dvorak, Grieg used popular airs in his music, but he did not evade the classical rules of form and writing.
