Although Nielsen's piano compositions contain important examples of advanced and original harmonic techniques, Nielsen remained convinced throughout his life of the importance of simple, natural intervals. He held that the study of intervals was vital for every musician as a means of maintaining contact with musical origins: "the Third is a gift from God, the Fourth an experience, the perfect Fifth the most sublime joy."
